A vetting is just a fact finding mission...
A vetting is a fact finding mission. It is NOT an attempt to rule out every horse you are thinking of buying.
It is a question of ‘I want to buy this horse, what kind of maintenance does he need and, if I buy him, is it fair to ask him to do the job I want him for? Can I care for him properly and be a responsible horse owner?’
No vet check will be completely ‘clean’ - like any medical check that we do, all humans have abnormalities and horses do too.
Vets don’t pass or fail horses - they just comment on their state of health.
As horse people, we say ‘fit for purpose’ because we don’t expect a $10k, 16 year old pony to have the same findings on a vet check as a $90k, 9 year old.
‘Fit for purpose’ means that the horse can do the job, for example, being a pony for a child, in keeping with its price and age.
Food for thought.
